Wildfire Resilient Gardens

Home: About

WHAT I OFFER

I provide wildfire-resilient garden consultations and educational services to help homeowners reduce their risk of wildfire loss. By blending FireSmart landscaping guidelines with horticulture and permaculture principles, I help you create beautiful, functional landscapes that work with nature while protecting your home.

Although the “wet west coast” feels far from wildfire risk, our summers are becoming hotter, drier, and more water-limited. At the same time, communities continue to expand into forested areas, increasing the potential for damaging wildfires on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.  â€‹In 2025, the BC Wildfire Service responded to 1,350 wildfires that burned 886,360 hectares across the province. Fifteen fires were identified as notable events, three occurring on Vancouver Island.

Wildfire modelling shows summer heat and drought will intensify, making it essential for homeowners to take an active role in reducing risk. Thoughtful design and stewardship of gardens and forested properties can significantly lower the chance of home and community loss. I work with homeowners and communities ready to steward their properties toward greater wildfire resilience.

While no property can be made completely fireproof, a thoughtfully designed and well-maintained landscape can substantially reduce the risk of loss.

WHAT IS WILDFIRE RESILIENT GARDENING?

Wildfire resilient gardening involves designing and maintaining gardens to reduce the risk of wildfire loss in the event of a wildfire.  The choices we make of the types of vegetation we plant and where has an effect on how a wildfire and fire embers will behave on our property.   Having defensible space, healthy soil and  an ability to retain or conserve water in the landscape are also practices that increase the resiliency of our gardens.  Wildfire resilient plant choices can also be pollinator friendly, bio-accummulators, nitrogen fixers and contribute to food security.  Strategically using vegetation can make your gardens resilient and beautiful.

EDUCATION & RESOURCES

The west coast is abundant with many keen gardeners who are very capable of cultivating wildfire resiliency into their gardens and properties.   For those who need a little assistance I provide wildfire resilient garden consultations.   In my "free resources" tab I provide links to a variety of videos, reports, and fact sheets related to wildfire resilient gardening, invasive plants and permaculture.  My daughter, Garden Alchemist, is now taking the lead in delivering wildfire resilient gardening training and offers a variety of lengths of courses.   Please contact her directly if you are looking for training on this topic.
